As a food banker, you play a critical role in reducing childhood hunger in your community by providing millions of pounds of food to hungry families. Food banks also have a strong history of supporting efforts to expand the federal nutrition supports in the community (food stamps, summer food, snacks, and WIC) and at schools (breakfast, lunch, snacks). These programs help make ends meet for families struggling to put enough food on the table.

There are many ways you can help to put breakfast first in your community:

Find out if schools in your community are not offering breakfast – and urge them to do so. As you know, there are hungry children in every corner of the state – including communities with low percentages of children enrolled in free or reduced price school meals. Yet, some school districts and principals don’t believe there is a need to offer school breakfast. Food banks are perfectly positioned to educate school officials about the local face of hunger. Click here to find out if your local schools serve breakfast – or not.

Learn about options to increase participation. Schools now have a variety of student-friendly models to feed more kids a healthy breakfast: Provisions 2/3, Universal Classroom Breakfast, Second Chance Breakfast and Grab ‘n Go, are among the many ways schools can reach more kids. By increasing participation, not only do more kids eat, but the breakfast program becomes stronger financially. Your local principal or food service director can let you know which participation options are currently underway.

Convene key partners. Food banks can play a vital role in bringing together a breakfast working group. Invite the school food service director, principals, nutrition educators, school board members and other community advocates to meet and discuss potential strategies to increase access and participation in the School Breakfast Program. Urge schools to consider one of the student-friendly breakfast models to maximize participation. Staff from CFPA, CAFB and USDA are available to assist with convening these meetings.

Support state legislation to expand school breakfast. While many decisions are made locally, the Governor and State Legislature make critical choices about resources, quality and access to breakfast at school. Food bank voices are essential to success in Sacramento. Sign up here for the Nutrition Action Alert to stay up-to-date on state legislation.

Market the local School Breakfast Program to the member agencies, programs and they clients they serve in that district. Increase their knowledge about school nutrition programs, so they can promote increased participation.

Distribute basic outreach materials to inform families that the School Breakfast Program is available to all low-income children – regardless of immigration status. Coming Soon!
