You have probably heard your mom or dad tell you to eat breakfast. Or you have heard others tell you that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Have you ever wondered why it is so important to start our days with breakfast? Here are some reasons why we should all start with a good breakfast:
  • Eating breakfast gives us energy to keep our minds and bodies strong and healthy.
  • Breakfast helps us concentrate better, give us energy to play with our friends, and help us through all activities in the morning until lunchtime.
  • Breakfast is very important while we’re at school. Eating breakfast helps us to focus on our school work and do better in school without being distracted by our stomach growling or headaches from being hungry.

Now that we know how important breakfast is, what can we do to encourage our friends and other kids to eat breakfast?

Here are some things you can do:

Talk to your parents and family about the importance of breakfast.
You and your family can make a plan to eat breakfast.

Talk to your friends about the importance of breakfast. You and your friends can meet before school to eat breakfast together. This will give you a chance to hang out with your friends, and fuel your body and mind before school starts.

Talk to the student body government about breakfast foods available at your school. If you have vending machines or student store at your school, find out what food items are being sold. If you have a school breakfast program at school, find out who’s actually eating at school. You and other students at school may write letters, talk to principles, or go to school board meetings to express your thoughts and ideas about making sure students are eating healthy breakfast at your school.

If you don’t have time in the morning to prepare breakfast or if your school does not have a breakfast program, you can try getting your breakfast ready the night before. You can have easy, quick breakfast by having dry cereal, instant oatmeal, or fruit in a basket or cupboard in your kitchen. You can also have yogurt, milk, hard-boiled eggs in your refrigerator. If you’re not hungry first thing in the morning, ask your parents if you can take a snack to eat later in the morning.
