Research shows that eating a nutritious breakfast is central to health and well being. Unfortunately, every day, many students miss out on those benefits of breakfast. Implementing robust school breakfast programs can help ensure that all students healthy and ready to learn.

A nutritious breakfast is a healthy way to start the day.
Students who eat breakfast have higher daily intakes of vitamin A, vitamin C, riboflavin, calcium, zinc, and iron.

A nutritious breakfast promotes healthy eating throughout the day.
Students who eat breakfast are more likely to make healthy food choices throughout the day.

Breakfasts served at school are healthier than breakfasts from home and elsewhere. Participants in the federally-funded School Breakfast Program consume less added sugar, more fruit, and more milk at breakfast than nonparticipants. Students who eat school breakfast are more likely to meet the Recommended Daily Allowances (RDA) for many important micronutrients compared to students who eat breakfast at home.

The School Breakfast Program supports obesity prevention and overall student health.
Students participating in the School Breakfast Program are less likely to be overweight or obese. Schools that implement effective breakfast models are known to experience a decrease in students reporting stomachaches and headaches.
