Oakland Unified School District - Grab n' Go
Where
Fremont Federation of High Schools in Oakland
Unified School District (OUSD) - a single campus
housing three high schools.
Enrollment & Demographics (2010-11)
- Approximately 1,100 students enrolled
- Over 80 percent of enrolled students are
eligible for free or reduced price school meals
Breakfast Model
On March 21, 2011 Fremont Federation launched a Grab n' Go breakfast model.
- Before the school day begins, all students are invited to pick up bagged breakfasts, which can be eaten in the classroom during the first 15 minutes of first period.
- The model launched with three service locations, including building entrances and high-traffic hallways. There are plans to use additional service locations near the campus gate as weather permits.
- Breakfast is universally free for all students at Fremont
Federation. In fact, Oakland Unified School District offers
breakfast free-of-charge to all students at all campuses
through the Provision 2
option.
Best Practices
Prior to the Grab n' Go launch, the OUSD Nutrition
Services team and the Youth Wellness Advisory Board (a group
of Fremont Federation students) worked to
secure support from all campus
stakeholders,
including administrators, teachers, and custodial staff.
The
Board will continue to promote
the school breakfast program. One example of their
peer-driven promotional efforts is shown in the image below -- a sign encouraging students to participate in school
breakfast.
