Eating Breakfast Makes a Difference

  • Participating in school breakfast, school lunch and/or food stamps protects low-income girls from becoming overweight. [1]
  • Eating breakfast lowers fat intake and limits snacking over the rest of the day. [2]
  • Eating breakfast is a habit of kids who have a healthy weight—but it’s not a habit among overweight kids. [3]
  • Skipping breakfast is linked to greater body fat. [4]

Kids Who Eat School Breakfast Eat More Nutritious Food

  • California kids who ate school breakfast were more than twice as likely to eat a serving of fruits or vegetables as kids who made their own breakfast and 1½ times as likely to do so as kids whose parents made breakfast for them. [5]
  • In California, 37% who ate breakfast at school met the “5-A-Day” goal, compared to only 17% of kids who did not eat a school breakfast. [6]
  • Low intake of fruits & vegetables is linked to overweight. [7]
  • Nationwide, kids who eat school breakfast eat more fiber, Vitamin C and calcium than non-participants. [8]

Kids Who Eat School Breakfast Eat Less Junk Food

  • Nationwide, kids who eat school breakfast eat less added sugar than non-participants for breakfast. [9]
